History:
Kleven Boston Elementary School, commonly called Boston Elementary, opened its doors in October of 1988 with 630 students in grades K-6.
The facility was named in honor of former Cherokee County Superintendent of Schools, Kleven Boston. Mr. Boston (9/3/1916 – 12/3/1991) was a lifelong resident of Cherokee County and a veteran of World War II (Army Air Corp). A graduate of Reinhardt College and UGA, he taught at New Bethel, Big Springs, and Oak Grove schools in Cherokee County. He also taught agriculture at Cherokee High School and later became the principal at Cherokee High School. From 1959-1976 he served as the Superintendent of Schools for Cherokee County.
Also, the street name for Boston Elementary, Othello Drive, adds to the heritage of the community. In the late 1800’s a school named for a local girl, Othello Jones, was located on the property of Boston Elementary.
Due to tremendous growth in the planned community of Towne Lake, student enrollment at Boston Elementary climbed rapidly. To accommodate this student growth, an additional building housing 20 classrooms and a computer lab was constructed in 1992. By the 1994-95 school year, the school was serving 1,618 students. Sixteen portable units were added to the campus, making a total of 69 classrooms available for instruction.
In 1995-96, the opening of a new school, Bascomb Elementary, resulted in the redistricting of students in the Boston attendance area. Boston’s student population decreased and stabilized at approximately 1,170 students for the next four years.
Fall of 2000 brought significant changes to Boston Elementary. Population growth continued unabated, necessitating further accommodations. Several elementary schools were reconfigured from K-6 to K-4 with Boston being one of three such schools. Student enrollment decreased to approximately 830 students and preschool special needs classes were added.
In 2012, the opening of a new school, Clark Creek Elementary, resulted in the redistricting of the students in the Boston attendance area. Portions of the student population were redistricted to either Oak Grove Elementary or Clark Creek Elementary. The designations of Performing Arts Academy at Oak Grove and STEM Academy Clark Creek further reduced Boston’s population as students applied to attend the academies. In 2013, the Cherokee Innovation Zone was reconfigured once again when the new E.T. Booth Middle School opened to become a 6-8 school. That brought 5th grade to the four feeder elementary schools.
Currently Boston Elementary remains a K-5 school serving the needs of approximately 620 students. Two mobile units remain on campus. Principals at Boston ES have included Janice Prather (1988-1995), Val Bahun (1995-1999), Mary Raley (1999-Feb. 2003), Pete Jones (Interim Mar. 2003-June 2003), Dr. Lou Manzella (July 2003- Dec. 2004), Pete Jones, (Interim Jan. 2005- June 2005), Letitia Cline (July 2005-June 2010), Les Conley (July 2010-June 2012), Joey Moss (July 2012- June 2016), Izell McGruder (July 2016 - June 2018), Valerie Lowery (July 2018 - June 2023) and Jessica Currie (July 2023 - present).
